‘Carbon: The Unauthorised Biography’ wins again!
"Watch this film about life's central element and feel cosmically connected as never before." Neil deGrasse Tyson
Since premiering at CPH:Dox earlier this year, ‘Carbon- The Unauthorised Biography’ has gone on to win over a dozen international awards, including the latest, ‘Green Impact of the Year’ at the WCSFP Buzzies, just announced in Glasgow.
“We are incredibly honoured to be in the company of some of the best science documentaries in the world”, says executive producer, Sonya Pemberton.
From the ‘Grand Prix Best Documentary’ at Deauville France, to ‘Outstanding Excellence’ at Docs Without Borders International Film Festival USA, to the ‘Gold Prize’ at China Dragon Awards, and becoming a double finalist at the Jackson Wild Media Awards, Carbon has been recognised for its filmmaking innovation and its contribution to the climate conversation.
“The Student Jury Prize at Academia Film Olomuc in the Czech Republic was a special thrill, reflecting how our films’ novel approach is resonating, particularly with younger audience members”, Niobe Thompson, co-director/coproducer.
Produced by Genepool Productions and Handful of Films, ‘Carbon: The Unauthorised Biography’ (1 x 89 min, 1 x 55 min) was commissioned by ABC, CBC and ARTE France. The Australian theatrical release, via Umbrella Entertainment, took place across 25 cinemas from February 2022, followed by the CBC and ARTE television release in March, with the ABC Australian TV launch in July. In Canada, Carbon also appeared in large format IMAX screenings; an epic screen for an epic journey!
Distributed by TVF International, the film has so far sold to more than 15 territories worldwide, including National Geographic in Latin America.
Carbon is also distributed to Australian schools via Enhance TV, ClickView, Beama Film, ATOM and Kanopy, with education packs to help teachers deliver fun, surprising, and insightful lessons in science and sustainability. The film is available to watch in Australia on ABC iView.
In a novel move, Monash University’s Climate Change Communications Hub is collaborating with the filmmakers to scientifically analyse the film’s ongoing impact on audience behaviour – the interim report reveals that the film deepened respondents understanding of carbon and, importantly, motivated over 80% of respondents to take more action to reduce their carbon footprint.
